Some ideas for improving this forum

1] Make it possible to subscribe to a thread. I cant do this in Chrome Win
2] Make it possible to get a daily digest of replies to a thread - then you inbox does not flood
3] Make all those sticky's on the top into one thread.

I don't think you were here before this version of the forum was launched were you @ZeroZero1   ;)

I find that Bookmarking the threads I'm interested in means I can keep up with them ... the equivalent of subscribing and you don't need a daily digest ... just check in on your bookmarked threads.  To Bookmark all you need to do is click on the star to the right of the thread title so that it becomes solid rather than an outline.

You can alter your Settings so that you don't get loads of emails ... I just have Pop Ups when someone posts on a thread I've  started, contributed to or Bookmarked ... very convenient.

I think that merging the stickies would be confusing ... it would be very difficult to follow advice from Nora as you wouldn't know which subject she was referring to ... why don't you just 'discard' them as I have, then they don't appear at the top.   I've bookmarked the ones that I think I might possibly need in the future so that I can find them easily.

     :)

  • There's an "official" way of dismissing the stickies, isn't there? But I can't remember what it is because I've already done it so I can't see any of them!

I do agree that the number of emails can be irritating. In the previous forum only one email was sent about a thread even if there were lots of replies but presumably that can't be done with this installation.

IMO bookmarking is not the answer, most forums have a little subscribe button. Bookmarking does not tell you when there is a new post. If you are interested in new posts on a thread not your own, you can't subscribe.
If there was one sticky labelled "Important notes from webmaster" then the first page would not be cluttered with stuff most people don't read  - we don't really need to be told "how to change you user name" etc on every visit.
I am aware you can turn off emails, but this is going from one extreme to the other, one "digest" a day is better. Most of the forums I visit have this option. At the moment, on my threads, if ten people reply, I get ten emails - all a bit unnecessary meaning ten emails to open, read and bin. Other sites actually provide a copy of the content of the forum reply in the email, but not here, you have to open the email, which does not contain the reply, then go to the forum, then go back and delete your email

Yes you can dismiss the emails, but not selectively, its all or nothing

I thought you clicked the star by the title of the post - that seems to send an email to you when someone posts?

As I said earlier ... you can easily Dismiss the Stickies ... I don't see them any more unless someone posts on them and brings them to the top.

My Settings are set so that I get Pop Ups only (not emails) in the following circumstances
Notify me when people post on my discussions.
Notify me when people post on my bookmarked discussions.
Notify me when people mention me.

I have chosen not to be notified  either by email or pop up when someone posts on a discussion I've taken part in.  That lead to far too many notifications.

I have chosen to receive an Email and a Pop Up when I have been sent a PM.

It works for me and means that my Email Inbox is not flooded.

I too am a member of other forums ... I find they all operate in slightly different ways ... I am adaptable and flexible enough for this not to irk me.

This forum is free for us to use and this version is a very great deal better than the previous one.   This is the way it works and I'm happy with it.  :)

I stand corrected on this point. I did not see this. I thought we were talking of the star in Chrome Browser

@NoraGW could you please explain to @ZeroZero1 how he can Dismiss the Stickies ... it's so long since we did it we've forgotten how to do it :flushed:

    Thanks  :)

Sorry if I am out of place being relatively new, a bit dumb with forum computer stuff. still finding my way around.
But the sticky announcements have a cog wheel, then a star sign next to it on the right hand side  on each topic?  If you click on that cog wheel sign it says dismiss, so you can make the sticky disappear.  I have not yet I still need 'em :D
Don't they appear for you Zero.

Cheers!  @Rubytoo :D I knew there was a way to do it ... just couldn't remember Duh!

I bookmarked the stickies  before I dismissed them in case I ever forget how to do something and need them again.
