Tree never pruned - how much?

I have a tree in my new property about 5 meters tall. It is very leggy the previous owner never pruned it- how much can I prune ? Is it wrong to prune 50 percent ?

    What sort of tree is it? How far from the house is it? If you don't know, a photo of the whole tree and a closeup of the leaves and shoots would help.
