Sowing seeds mixing with sand

Can I just sow seeds (white clover) or do they need to be mixed with sand as I've read somewhere else? I have spare compost but not sand and I don't want to be left with it. If they need mixing what are the quantities, how much of each?

I think mixing with sand is a way of distributing tiny seeds more evenly. It has no function otherwise.

Do I need to water the area first or how do I prepare the ground/soil?

A guide on how to sow the clover lawn is here: https://www.wikihow.com/Grow-a-Clover-Lawn I bought my seeds from Victoriana Nurseries, which by the way also have lots of how to guides on their site. In case anyone else is looking for the info.
