Sowing (white/dutch) clover and wild flower seeds

I have a bare patch at the end of my front garden where I want to sow clover. White clover seems to be good for the soil and attracts bees and butterflies, it's also easier to maintain. Then I saw an article today about wildlife gardening when I logged on here and I want to sow wildflower seeds in the back garden. Can I just sow them or do they need to be mixed with sand as I've read somewhere else? I have spare compost but not sand and I don't want to be left with it. If they need mixing what are the quantities, how much of each?
