Dahlia Height

VoyagerxpVoyagerxp Posts: 646
This year is the first time i've grown Dahlia's and they look great but they are quite tall. Is there a way to get them to grow at a lower height. Mine have grown higher than my fence which is not what i wanted.

Plant smaller ones.  :D My bedding dahlias grew to around 2.5 feet this year. Maybe it was just a good year for them.
    Yours look fab!

Mine are about the same size as yours. I bought them at a plant sale so had no idea what type they would be. But they turn out to be bigger than me. Thank god I put them in a large pot.

You can get tiny dahlias and huge ones.

If you want small dahlias, look for ones labelled as bedding dahlias. The larger type will usually need a good stake or two.

I grew dwarf dahlias from seed for the first time this year, they have been amazing. The tallest growing to 24 inches with an abundance of flowers.

I love your dahlias ... they look amazing. I’d be very pleased with those 😁
but yes, if you want smaller plants you need to buy different varieties ... they should have height descriptions if you buy from a reputable supplier.

This year Dahlias have responded to the heat and grown taller than usual. I have some Cafe au lait plants that were 4 ft last year, same plant is nearly 6 ft this year. They are in the same place in the garden and were fed the same. (BFB at time of planting out).
Next year those plants may be smaller if we have a cold year. I think they hide the fence quite well.
