Pumpkins collapsed

My OH has been growing 2 giant pumpkins and all was well until today when he looked and one had collapsed and the other has a hole in it. He has been watering with a soak hose, could it be too much water? The weather here in NW France has cooled down considerably after the high 30's for several weeks.
