What is the best compost for potting up lavender slips. just bought a big lot of rooted cuttings  quite an outlay for me don't want to lose any

    I'd go with a 50/50 mix of MPC and either grit or perlite.  They hate wet feet over winter so need excellent drainage.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
