Pyracantha

I have another question. We bought a pyracantha last autum and so far we have not had any buds or flowers so no hope for red berries this year. Should I be worried? Apart from that the plant looks very green and healthy

  • If you've had no flowers, then you'll have no fruit.

They grow on the previous years new growth, so it depends on what kind of pruning has been going on.

Mine produces an abundance of berries - best time to prune is just after flowering as you'll know what to keep, and what to cut back.
  • We planted a pyracantha a couple of years ago, it took a year or more to settle in and produce flowers and fruit - so don't give up on it MartineB, the birds love it and the flowers and fruit are worth waiting for.

Thank you RaspberryKiller and Guernsey Donkey2. I will now be patient and try not to worry...

I have a lovely pyracantha trained along a wall .....every year it has masses of flowers - then a large number of the flowers and leaves turn brown/black.  Others survive but I would love more berries. This year I used a fungus spray but it didn't seem to make any difference. Does anyone have any ideas please?

It may just be weather related, Berkley. If it's a big shrub, it may well be struggling to maintain every leaf and berry if it's in a very dry spot. They like sun, although happy enough in some shade, but I find they like a reasonable amount of moisture too.

They can be vulnerable to fireblight, but without a pic and some more info, it's hard to make a more accurate diagnosis  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
