Whatever it is, whatever name it has, I have it in my garden, and I can assure you @Ladybird4 it IS an umberlifer. I see no need to confuse the situation for the OP .
We get them at our Devon barn, too. I wonder if it's a local variant? It does seem to be a redder version of common hogweed. It's not caused any problems here but it is a rather sinister looking thing.

Wow, thank you so much for all your replies, that’s so helpful. And interesting to hear that others have the same in devon. We do have more recognisable hogweed too - I might send a picture of that to get your expert advice as to whether it’s the common or giant variety
