Red Onions

How do you know when red onions are ready to harvest? They are a good size but the inside was white. They had started to flower so i pulled the very top off

    Pick and use the ones which have bolted (ie have sent up flowering stems) as those won't store well.  As for the rest, wait until the leaves are turning yellow and have fallen over.  At that point, dig them up with the roots intact and leave them somewhere warm and dry (on the ground is ideal unless rain is forecast.)  Once the leaves and roots have shrivelled and are dry, brown and brittle, they are ready for storing.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
