Will Blueberries and Gooseberries grow OK together?

Howdy folks
A quick quesition - are these OK to grow next to one another? Do they fair well in similar soil?
Thanks

I've got both in my fruit patch, though there are a couple of blackcurrants in between. Acid soil here, but haven't done much to it. Plenty of fruit this year.

Blueberries cannot be grown in the open ground unless it is acidic, so you probably need to test it. If it is acidic you can grow your blueberries and gooseberries in the same bed as gooseberries are fine in acidic soil.
If your soil proves to be alkaline then you will need to grow your blueberries in ericaceous compost in containers and water with saved rainwater ... gooseberries are not as fussy and are fine in alkaline soil so they can grow in the open ground.

  • Thanks - I am planning on growing them in a trough, and by the looks of things, both like acidic soil, so may prepare the soil with some sulphur/sulphate.

I wouldn't put them both in the same container ... blueberries need  much more water than gooseberries.
