No red worms in dalek compost bins?

We don't seem to have seen any in our 3 bins since we emptied them out in the spring.
I did have to put down some strong black plastic underneath as the hedge roots were making hay in the compost. Is this the reason?  Where do they come from anyway and is it worth buying some in?

If you are going to stop the worms getting in from the bottom,  add them in the form of leaving a bucket full of old compost in so the worms keep being transferred from one bin to another.  Is it too dry? Worms will not work it if the mix is too dry.

Worms don't like it too dry or too hot.

Fire, I have watered the bins occasionally, seems to be damp enough and there are plenty of other insects in them. I think the hot weather is probably the cause so will wait to see what happens. Will also investigate buying some online - we don't have a fishing shop in Bath anymore.
