This has come from nowhere and there are at least 12 to 15 new plants that have popped up in one area. I thought it might be a version of a verbena, any thoughts?

They do look verbena-ish. I know the tall one bord...something  does self seed but of course you would have had the plant in the first place to self seed.

I do have a verbena bonariensis in that area but I also have some smaller versions so it could be them.

  • Definitely verbena Bonariensis, without a doubt.

Quite possible, if they grow really tall it's the one I can't spell!

Tall one more likely. They are lovely airy plants so ok at front, middle or back if a border.

Yes - bonariensis. Mine had turned up their toes by December, but I noticed a tiny little seedling in the raised border which gets most protection from other plants.
Yours may have seeded in from another garden. Mine frequently produce seed a fair distance away - depends which way the wind blows in your plot!
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

    That's what has happened!
I remember next door had them just the other side of the fence and they were glorious and tall, they must have sent the seeds over.
