Pink Climbing Roses for Doorway

FfoxgloveFfoxglove Posts: 535
Hi! I'd really like to grow a climbing rose over my doorway. I'd like it to be brightly coloured (pink ideally) and fragrant. It will have to grow in a large pot though.

Any suggestions and pics gratefully received!

I was thinking Gloriana / Starlight Express or Surpassing Beauty but have never seen these roses in life!

Thanks everyone!

This is ''Surpassing Beauty'' or the Woolverstone Church Rose as it's also known.. it's true identity is unknown, but probably a hybrid perpetual rose from the late 19th Century.   Let me say that, I don't recommend it for your purpose.  It's really something of a specialist/collectors rose, and I don't mean to sound snobbish here.  The scent is one of the best there is though, but you want something else for your porch. One of the others of your choice would be better...

Compassion is a lovely pink, scented rose, good for climbing up a wall. Make sure the pot is big and you will have to feed and water the rose more often than a rose in the ground.

If you want a highly scented, bright pink rose which withstands less than ideal conditions (mine is in a bone dry, shady woodland border) I recommend Gertrude Jekyll which can be trained as a short climber.

So it’s one to go up the side of the door and remain well behaved - rather than one to completely frame a door.

PS - that’s not my rose. (I wish😜) - I suspect this is at the David Austin gardens - but it shows what can be done with this rose and TLC.

Gertrude Jekyll is gorgeous, I have 3, smells wonderful, but she is very prickly so I didn't choose her for a doorway.

What about Zephrine Douhrin (?) Beautiful scent bright pink and no thorns.

    Hi guys,

Thank you for all your amazing replies!

That's perfect advice about surpassing beauty... I am definitely not a specialist.

    :)

I have a compassion rose in the back I recently bought but it hasn't bloomed yet so that's a possibility...

The only thing that deters me from ZD is the tales of mildew and black spot. Any experience on this front? If this is exaggerated I'll go for this one!

Otherwise my visitors can be spiked by GJ whilst enjoying her lovely scent!!!

Just planted this one in my garden: Shrub Rose 'Sourire d'Orchidee'. Have seen it growing nicely over an arch in my village. Not so sure about growing it in a pot, though.

You are invited to a virtual visit of my garden (in English or in French).
