Laurel

Hi
I have a reasonably large garden which is surrounded by a very large established Laurel hedge. I would like to create some beds or plant fruit trees, in front of it and wondered how far away from the hedge I would need to plant. Are there any plants which would not cope with being close to Laurel and is there anything I should also do e.g. install and irrigation system for the plants?
Thank You

A large established hedge will make it difficult to establish borders nearby. Laurel will compete for nourishment and water. Your soil and climate will also dictate the distance.
    How big exactly is it?
An island type of bed several yards away would propbably be fine. You'll need to leave enough room to access the hedge for it's maintenance , and also for anything you plant  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
