Hi this plant has just begun to sprout up all along one border in my garden in the lawn grass. Can anyone please tell me what it is, I pull it up but it just snaps off just under the turf and reappears a few days later. Its not been here before, just appeared this spring. Possibly from a tree like plant with a wonky trunk that my daughter sat on and broke last summer. Dispersing it's pine cone purple like seed heads on the lawn when I removed it?

Hello Sam. They look like suckers from a Stag's Horn Sumach or Rhus typhina. From your description of the tree it could very well be this one.

Image result for Stags horn sumac
Your tree looks like the laciniata or cut leaved variety.

That's the one, the 'trunk' was about 5 inches round and grown in a way to provide a none too stable seat for my toddler. How do I get rid of it please and are the roots joining from one plant to another?

You can either dig up the lawn, or get some glyphosate weedkiller and paint it/smear it carefully on the leaves, avoiding drips onto the grass below and leave it to die off ... however be aware that it is likely to damage or kill the main plant as well as the suckers, as they share the same root system.

I'm afraid that Stag's Horn Sumach (which is a beautiful elegant plant) will behave itself perfectly as long as no one cuts into it/prunes/removes a branch ... it then thinks it is under attack and will throw out suckers all around for years to come.

It's a shrub I love but I daren't grow it here as I know that at some stage it would outgrow the garden and I'd have to prune it ............... scared

Thanks for your help. My little girl sat on it and broke the trunk off at the very base. I chopped it up and it went in the green bin.. I've tried killing it with Roundup Gel but it's come back, you can see in my image of the scorched grass... Do I need to get a paintbrush and literally paint each leaf on the 20 or so plants ? And if so, how long before I can water the garden and then mow it please?

Could be easier if you just keep mowing the grass and plants frequently which should weaken the suckers over time.

@we11ington, that thread is a year old so the OP may not see your response.
