Lawn advice

Hello,

I’m looking for some advice to improve the condition of my lawn.

It was re-turfed about 2 and a half years ago but we lived abroad for 6 months (my sister lived here) and I don’t think it was ever cut... so it was really overgrown and we’ve struggled to improve ever since.

Now there’s a lot of brown grass, muddy patches and it’s very bumpy.

what would people recommend to improve it (eg overseeding etc)? Or is it a lost cause and do I need to returf?..

You will struggle to do anything in the summer. If you rake out the dead stuff you arent going to have much grass left and unless we get some decent rain reseeding will be hit and miss you are more likely to get weeds rather than grass.
Autumn and spring are the best times for this.

Just keep it mown this summer.  In the fall, hire a gas powered aerator.  Run it around the lawn a few times.  Mix some grass seed with a bag of children's sand, and overseesd it.  Rake it if it looks like it might help.  In the spring hire a lawn roller, and roll it after a good rain (but not too muddy, you don't want compaction.. just a smoother surface).  It will be an okay lawn.  Not a bowling green.. but it should be green and comfortable walking across.  If you want an amazing lawn.. you'll need more than that.  Depends on what end results you're after.
