Eleagnus bushes

Ok so one of my 8 eleagnus bushes died back so i hacked it back big time. And now the stjmp that are left have black mould on the ends. Is this what has caused the plant to die? Some sort of fungus infection? Is there anything i can do to prevent the other plants getting infected? Please see the photos. any clues would be much appreciated

    Looking at your stumps, I think it looks like Verticillum Wilt. The best way is to prune out as many branches as possible until you see good wood. Your shrubs may be fine, but if they are grown in humid and heavy soils with poor drainage, they may be weakened.
