What bug is this?

Saw this on my blackcurrant bush and didn't want to kill it indescriminately. What is it. I assume it's a type of caterpillar going into crysallis form but is it going to harm the bush or has it done it's damage?

No, it's done all the eating already - next stage is a butterfly or moth, sex and the odd nip of nectar to keep going!

Looking at those white tufts, it might be a Comma butterfly:

Comma caterpillars do feed on currants, although nettle is their most common food plant.
