Lupins changing colour!

WolfHeartWolfHeart Posts: 5
Hi I have a potted lupin which I bought as a plant 2 years ago, and the first year it flowered a lovely pink.. fast forward 2 years and it’s yellow/purple!! I know it’s the same plant as I’ve only ever bought 1 lupin and as it’s in a pot it can’t have migrated from anywhere else. How has this happened?? Any ideas greatly appreciated 🙂 pics for info.

It's to do with the soil, isn't it?  The PH balance?

I don’t know, I didn’t think lupins were effected by that..? But absolutely nothing has been done to the soil in that pot - I haven’t even fed the plants oops! It had 2 pink years then turned purple - I assumed it was cross pollination or something from bees etc

They are either biannual or a short lived perennial (2-3 years)..  and seedlings often revert back to color types.  Your original pinks have died of old age, and the purple are the babies.

I agree with Blue Onion.  The leaves look different too (wider), so likely a seedling has taken over when the mother plant died.

Aw really? That’s interesting, thanks! Wish I could remember the variety because it was so lovely, and haven’t seen one the same since.

Well I can beat that! My lovely, well established blue lupin has always flowered blue. This year, it flowered brilliantly as usual and after cutting the dead spikes it produced a second crop of flowers in BRIGHT YELLOW!! No, there are not 2 plants there just the one. No, I did not feed it with anything more than Growmore Anyone had this happen?

The blue is pretty but that pink one is absolutely gorgeous so if you do remember the name. Would love one that colour, I just have a mixed lot I got free.
