Need help identifying weed

Today I pulled one of these out of my vegetable patch:

This is all that was above the surface, but when I started digging it out, I found this:

Anyone know what this is? I've never seen anything like it. (As you can see, the root snapped before I could get it all up, so it must have been even deeper than this). My poor carrots that were growing next to it nearly didn't survive because I had to dig up so much soil!

The one I pulled up the other day had a leaf on it, which might help identify it:

I built my raised bed about two months ago, on top of a veg patch that had turned to weed. I know for sure that there were nettles and dock leaves there before, but this doesn't look like either to me.

    I would say that it is a shoot from a small piece of dock root left quite deep. By pulling it you will have weakened it further. It may need another pulling or two before it gives up altogether.
