Dead shelf hydrangea

I have bought a hydrangea 'Magical Moonlight' from the bargain bucket. It's a stick about a foot tall with three green leaves at the top. Should I cut everything down low, for it to kick up new growth? Does it need a few leaves?  Thanks for your thoughts.

@Fire,..congrats on getting a fantastic plant,..awesome bloom when it arrives,..if it only has the three leaves atop then i would recommend leaving them there,..the plant will produce more leaves in a very short time,..a water loving plant and should reach 3Ft + in a short time.

At this time of year a sickly plant needs its leaves to photosynthesise so leave them but make sure it's well watered and has good soil to grow in.   TLC this year should reap dividends for next year as healthy roots will make more flowering shoots after the spring prune and feed.
