I have just purchased some iron sulphate to 'green up' the lawn which I intend to apply using a watering can,  please can anyone advise me as to how soon after application I will need to water in if there is no rain forecast. Many thanks

Firstly, be very careful with sulphate of iron (SI) particularly if you are applying any where near hard landscape structures, concrete, brick etc. as SI leaves an orange (ferrous) stain which is virtually impossible to remove.

SI is soluble in water & this is the best way to apply. To ensure even application divide your garden into equal strips with a string line & apply with a watering can.

For a better & safer fertiliser try Sulphate of Ammonia for a quick lawn green up. Applied in the same way.

I find that powdered seaweed fertiliser is a good tonic to green up lawns ... no problem with burning the grass unless you put a ridiculous amount on, and harmless to any wildlife (and children and pets).

Thanks for recommendations. I have just attempted to use the Ferrous Sulphate for the first time and what a palava it was! It took me ages to work out the ratio of F.S to water
(only time will tell if I have done it correctly ) then I had to be careful not to get it in my eyes; tread it around on my boots and then, there was the question of thoroughly cleaning out the bucket; watering can and sprinkle bar. Perhaps over time it will become easier but at the moment I am wishing I had used something a little simpler! Phew!

This is why it's often best to get someone in! I imagine that applying it with a watering can will result in some uneven application. Not the end of the world though as the effects will wear out before long anyway, and it's only a lawn after all!
