Plant ID flowering shrub

Hi can anyone confirm what this lovely flowering shrub is? My cousin has it in full flower in her garden but wasn't sure if it was a rhodedendron, weigelia or an Azalea? Any ideas to confirm?

  • not weigelia.
Azalia and Rhododendron are the same family but I would say your plant is a Azalia.

I agree with Chrissy the gardener, likely to be Azalea, but now classed as Rhododendrons.

What kind of conditions does it need if I try to get one for my garden?
  • They do best in acidic soil and dappled shade but I have seen them grow quite happily in full sun. I think you get a better flower colour if in shade.

The soil needs to be acidic. They grow best in shade/dapple shade. Plenty of organic matter to keep the soil nice and rich.

Great thanks for the advice. Something to consider for my borders in the near future maybe?
