Depends on how big you want it to get. I have Pittosporum that are 30 years old, 6 feet high, and about 1 metre wide (so about 1.5 metre from our fence), but most of our Pittosporums are only small shrubs (many in pots), so perhaps only about 12-20 inches across. Think about your long term aims for size and shape, and plant accordingly. Once established they put on quite a bit of growth each year, so I'd err on allowing for more space than less.
