My buddleia Weyeriana is very ill

I have a yellow buddleia which I grew from a cutting years ago. It grows very big and I cut it down to about 3 feet every March. It has always been very healthy, but now it is ill. I live in Dordogne and this winter was very very wet, also cold.

Please does anyone know what is the matter with it and if there is a cure?

It could be Downy Mildew as you mentioned your very cold and wet winter, but not 100% sure as Buddleias are tough shrubs.

It's a difficult thing to control. You will need to make sure your shrub is pruned to allow air circulation and I recommend you promptly removed any dead leaves over winter and then over the colder months, dig away a very thick layer of the soil surrounding the shrub and lay new soil in its place and see what happens next year. If the bush is severely affected, prune it as hard back as possible.

Thank you. I raked away the dead leaves last winter and it had been pruned, at least 2/3 cut off. All the new growth is affected now. This winter I'll change the topsoil.

Last spring was very dry so it didn't grow very well at first, then we had a wet June and it started growing like mad, wasn't ill then.
