Lawn Full Of Weeds

Hi All, new to the forum. I’ve attached a photo of a weed that has taken over my lawn. They’re everywhere. Is a weed and feed the best way to go about eliminating these? Or should I look to dig each 1 up and put grass seed down? There’s literally 100’s of them. Many thanks in advance for any help. Cheers

I think that's catsear (Hypochaeris radicata), it comes up with very attractive dandelion like flowers on tall stems. You can hand weed using a daisy grubber type tool or just leave them and enjoy the flowers. Grass is overrated anyway  :)

  • Looks like cats ear, not an expert though. Pretty sure that will have a deep tap root whatever it is. You could dig it out with a knife, taking care to get the whole root out, or have a look at those weed killers that you touch on to the weeds leaves.

If you don't mind chemical weedkillers, Weedol Lawn Concentrate Weedkiller is awesome stuff https://www.homebase.co.uk/weedol-lawn-concentrate-weedkiller-500ml_p410352

It's a broad leaf weedkiller, so it kills pretty much everything that isn't grass. The idea is that you apply it to your entire lawn, so it also kills the smaller weeds that you can't really see. One application a year should be all you need.

It takes a few weeks to work so give it time, but I'm sure it will sort out your problem. Once the weeds have died, you might want to consider reseeding any larger patches, although healthy lawns will naturally close small gaps. Reseeding is best done in September when it's a little cooler.

NB: Weedol is most effective when the weeds are growing well (not at the height of summer) so try to apply it ASAP.

Have to agree with wild edges here ; why not let the flowers do their job , then mow them down before they set seed .
A shame really, have you thought about introducing more wild-flowers to your lawns ?
Certainly makes for a more interesting feature in any garden .

You will find that a weedy lawn will stay greener in the dry weather than a grassy lawn. It is much more interesting too. I only hoik out fox and cubs -can't remember the proper name for it.
Leave it and concentrate on the fun stuff like planting up borders.
Ps going round the edges with a half moon makes it look neat and kempt -if that's a word. :)

    In London. Keen but lazy.

Awesome. I saw a plant growing on waste ground up the road that I haven't been able to identify. It's not a common plants around here but after looking up what fox and cubs is I think it might have been that. Is it a problem weed in some places?

My dad calls them Indian paintbrushes, and mows around them when they are in bloom in the grass.

Might be easier to get someone in just to spray the lawn. Granular weed and feed products give patchy results
