Fatsia Japonica gone a bit leggy!

Have a 7 year old Fatsia Japonica which is in the process of putting on new growth at the top but underneath stems have gone bare (bear? Grrrr??) where the leaves have gone yellow and fallen off. I've never pruned the thing - is now a good time to do it and if so, how far down can I go before risking killing it (worse case scenario, hopefully!). Its got a fairly thick trunk near the bottom before it branches out to two or three branches which have all individually grown up. Thanks in advance for advice.

Mine is quite a shady place and seems fine.
