What on earth has happened here!

Can anyone help with this. I dug up a piece of what really does appear to be a Peony out of my daughters garden and found it looked like this.  
The odd looking pods are seemingly attached to the end of the peony but maybe just tangled.
But I have never seen the like of the pod, attached or not attached, to the peony and if it not part of the plant I have no idea what it is. One pod is cracked open and the other one is still rounded and onion shaped. The pods have quite hard sufaces.

Yes the pod on mine and the roots do look a lot like that. I am not going to take any chances and keep that in my garden. It's for the bin.

That does look very much like mine, both the pod and the lumpy roots.  They will go in the dustbin. It has not been in contact with my garden.
