Californian lylac

I have three of these shrubs. One a standard 2 are low growing. In Scotland we had a very cold winter. Their leaves are all brown and when you touch those leaves they fall apart. There are signs of green leaves. Are these plants dead or past it.

I have been pleasantly surprised to see quite a lot of new leaf growth on even the most damaged limbs. They (x3) very nearly got the chop but glad to say it looks like patience (not a normal trait of mine) has / will be rewarded.

My plant, which is 'Gloire de Versailles' and is sometimes deciduous, defoliated a few weeks back, but is in full leaf again.  No dieback, except by pruning..
