Red ants

We are plagued with red ants! At present we are digging out some lawn to create a new planting bed and we have found numerous nests. Is there anything other than ant powder that we can add to the soil when planting our new bed? We dont want our new plant roots destroyed by the ants! Any suggestions please?

Lots of water.  Ants don't like soggy nests.

Ant nematodes will drive them away.  Much better than using ant powder which is an indiscriminate pesticide.

     Hope that helps :)

    Thankyou
  • I have found red ants in my newly dug over 2nd vegeable plot, I hope I don' get any issue growing, I wouldn' t want to use ant killer n the soil.
  • I was wondering recently why there was a massive mound on my lawn. Recently inspected and found red ants are everywhere! About 20 nests all over the lawn. I have a toddler so really would like to get rid of them so we can enjoy the lawn in the summer.
I've panicked and put down ant powder but now feeling guilty as we get a lot of birds in the garden (now I know why)! Any solutions to kill ants (not just chase them around)?
