Weed identification

Is this a type of mares tail?  It has just started popping up within an area about a metre square in my flower border and it has grown very quickly.  It is already 8 inches tall and there are other buds appearing nearby.  Do I need to act fast to eradicate it?  Thanks in advance.

    Doesn't look like marestail.
    A photo of the plant in situ would help get an accurate ID.  The one above gives no idea of scale or growth habit.

    It looks like a phlox shoot. Can we see a photo of the whole plant?

    There are shoots popping up all over this area, some coming through other plants.  
    I pulled some up which was easy and have attached a photo of the roots.  They range from just poking through to about 8 inches at the moment.

    I think I will keep one or two and see what happens.  Hopefully it’ll be something nice.
