Help! Buried patio.

I've gradually been renovating one garden since moving in, and was hoping today to plant some roses. However, there's what I can only assume is a concrete patio in the way! I knew there was some concrete to shift, and the sledgehammer had dealt with the first bits easily, but the rest send made of sterner stuff and it's making dents, but only that. Any ideas for the best way to shift this? It's also do thick that in wondering if it's something other than a patio, but I can't imagine what. Given its on a slow, I can only assume they made it super deep to act as a retaining wall too.  In case it's not obvious from the photo, the concrete is at least 25cm deep - possibly more.

Advice welcome!

Photo. It's about 2m by 1m, and pretty thick.

I suppose it could be, although it's not raised vs the rest of the garden, which is expect from a shelter (not knowing much about these things). The "patio" send to be composed of 3-4 slabs of concrete separately poured. Would that be normal for a shelter roof?

Or maybe someone put slabs over an existing patio (or two!).

  • An old air raid shelter would not normally be made of concrete. It looks more like a foundation for something. Unfortunately nothing is going to grow on top of it. Looks like a job for a pneumatic drill.

Are you sure it wouldn't be useful to keep some or all of the patio? They can provide good foundations for structures - shed, greenhouse etc. I'm just checking.

I was actually thinking of layingla new one on top, for a while but it's pretty uneven and had some big cracks so thought I'd be better taking it up. It's also need to add write a bit of height, which would mean.... More concrete! :) Roses sounded like a much better plan. Pneumatic drill it may well be by the sound of it!

I would investigate paving to lay on top and how to level it.

I was faced with a similar problem some years ago in a previous garden. I went to the hire shop and rented a Kango electric /pneumatic drill. It made short work of a old garage base that was in the way of everything. Then I needed a skip to get rid of rubble!
