Perhaps too much fertiliser? What did you use?  Or have you or somebody else perhaps
sprayed weed killer nearby? Other than that, I haven't a clue I'm afraid - sorry!

I just use the granular fertilliser from the garden centre westland i think .. and the slow release granules ..... thats what i usually use ... i should be doing that this time of year any way ....... can,t imagine that doing that damage ... ..by the way it lives in a giant pot .. has done for years ....  i,ve pruned one lot of black dead stems already , its on its third set of new growth .. i don,t want to cut any more off ...thanks roy

When was it last repotted with fresh loam-based compost?

It looks to me as if it made a lot of fresh growth early in the season and this was then cut back by frosts ... this spring that could've happened two or three times!

I think I'd repot in fresh John Innes No 3 loam-based compost and prune the head to reshape and rejuvenate it .... thinning out a lot of the older branches and cutting the newer growth to just a few buds  - maybe 3 or 4 ... pruning to an outward facing bud ... it'll perk it up no end.

You might have to wait a bit longer for flowers, but this way you'll have a rejuvenated rose bush which will keep on for several more years.   :)

Could it be Blue Moon?  It's been a popular standard rose for quite a while  :)

Hi , thanks , i took it out of the pot .. i think march time ish ..got rid of some of the older compost , i put fresh i think it was levingtons rose compost 50kg bag stuff from the garden centre and sprinkled the granular fertiliser in ... standard procedure to be honest ..... so do you think its been clobbered by the weather basically , so i need to start again ... yes that makes sense i suppose .... it does look a bit out of shape , it didn,t but having pruned it recently i wasn,t expecting to , i don,t like to have black shoots on it ..... do you think if i just leave it the new growth on it now will survive ? , theres been no frost for a while now and it looks good in the near future ....thanks roy

It's up to you of course, but I'd give it a good pruning.   :)

There was a Blue Moon in the garden of a house we moved into in the early70s, along with a Super Star and a Fragrant Cloud    .... the first roses I'd ever been responsible for caring for.  :)

I use JI No 3 for roses in containers ... it's the nearest thing to 'real soil' there is, has plenty of nutrients in it and it also has a bit of weight to it so they don't get top heavy

I use Fish, blood and bone in the spring  and a handful of clematis feed in the spring and again in the summer.

I use seaweed liquid diluted as a foliar feed if the plants are looking as if they need a boost.
