A tree planted at the far end of the grass would effectively block the flats beyond. Something like an ornamental rowan or crab apple would do the trick. It wouldn't need to be that big - a small to medium sized tree. Have a look at what your local nursery can offer. Would take up to 10 years of course for it to start to do the biz.

A pergola erected this month would start to screen at that height immediately, and with the right choice of climbers it could effectively screen the flats by mid to late summer.

Thanks so much everyone for your help, yes haven't ruled out the pergola idea and am considering planting some small/medium height trees closer to the house to provide screening and to break up the long garden
