Problem planting picea glauca conica!!

Hi Hope someone can help me on this one.
I bought a potted 6ft picea glauca conica last September. It was in an extremely large pot probably about 50cm wide. I was planting it into the garden today and as I gently pulled the pot away the whole root system collapsed! Lots of brown fibrous roots around some sandy soil which fell from the conifer out onto the floor in a heap. I still went ahead and planted it with what was left of the thick short stumps of roots.
The conifers foliage appears very healthy and doesn’t have any signs of disease. Does anyone have any idea why this has happened? It’s never been overly dry due to the wet weather we had and it also sat happily in thick snow and ice.
