Salvia greggii Emperor Vs New gardener

I bought this plant around four years ago. It flowered in the first year and I pruned it back but it’s not flowered since. Growth has been vigorous, it’s increased in size 3x!  Should I give up on it ?

Try  another light prune now if you can see new leaves then give it a high potash feed (tomato feed is ok) to encourage flower production. It needs a hot sunny sheltered spot.

It likes to be in the sun. I believe it flowers on the previous seasons growth so it only needs a light pruning to tidy it up. It’s a late flowering one (late summer/autumn) I wouldn’t give up on it, if it doesn’t flower this year it will next year. It’s a lovely plant.

If it’s not flowering it’s either in too much shade or your soil is too rich. Try to create a free draining consistency. Otherwise you’ll just get masses of foliage.
  • Thanks all. That explains perfectly where I’ve gone wrong!!
