Flooded border, what do I do??

Hi everyone,

I’m such an inexperienced gardener :( didn’t have a clue what I was doing when I dug this last autumn. Having clay in my garden I dug out the soil from the border in order to add some top soil and compost for planting.
I dug about 2ft down and then realised (after help from here) I did it all wrong and should never have removed the clay soil and should have just improved what I had. It now looks like a pond and don’t know what to do from here. I was going to put all the soil I removed back and just improve it but now it looks like this. Where do I go from here?

Thank you you in advance S.C

Hi FD, it’s more clay and stones. Probably thicker than what was taken out.
Is there any hope to rectify this? Should I think about having a raised border?

Hi FD, yes it rained every day last week resulting in this. I’ll try your method once it’s soaked in a bit more. Thank you so much for your help.
  • Hello S.C
I would do the above but first I would use a fork and spike the soil under the water to help drain it away.this is especially good on your lawn to aireate it and help it drain away.
I have a clay garden as well and all you can do is to keep adding compost to help change the structure of the soil. With the amount of rain we have had you only have to dig down a very short depth before you find the clay very sodden and saturated

    Best regards
