Unusual tree

I came across several of these trees in the Belem Botanical Garden in Lisbon. I was especially struck by the unusual shape of the trunk, but have not been able to identify it from any of my botanical handbooks.

Is anyone able to identify this?

I think that is classed as a succulent rather than a tree but I can't for the life of me remember the genus.
