can I put orchids outside?

Hello all, about orchids - can I put them outside in the summer? All have finished flowering so have cut old stems down, fed & watered them but have run out of window-sills! Light but not in direct sunshine? Should I take them out of the holders so that light can cheer the roots up?
Please advise! But no, I don't have a greenhouse....

We stand ours outside all summer.  In the shade on a gravel tray.  That way we can give them a nice humid environment without their feet being in water.
