Lawn treatment

I will soon be about to use my new Varicutter and would appreciate any recommendations re height to set it etc, as I am told they can be brutal if used unwisely. Also, I was wondering if I need to use a moss killer before hand? And finally what lawn food is good for strength and colour? thank you.

I don't know what varicutter is, do you mean verticutter or a scarifyer ? The depth depends on if its a verticutter or a scarifyer.  If your lawn heavy infested with moss scarify first then moss kill, moss killer only kills the top inch.

@Perki is it best to cut the lawn before I scarify it,  or scarify it before I cut it?

Depend how long your grass is , cut the grass first if it long or the scarifyer will tear/rip the grass out, if its short crack on. I use the mower to pick any moss bits up after scarifying, it best to do hard scarifying in autumn really but doing it now better than not doing it at all.

Thanks Perki. I usually do scarify in the autumn, but due to health problems I didn't get round to doing it last autumn. The grass isn't that long so I will probably scarify this weekend....... weather permitting.

Scarify it high enough that it doesn't leave a lot of bare soil behind, but low enough that it rips up the majority of the moss!
