Hi. I’m looking to plant a hornbeam hedge at the back of the garden to give us some privacy and wondering if anyone has experience of doing this. I want it to grow about 6’ and be reasonably dense. I’ve looked at the different options and the best one, as far as cost is concerned, seems to be bareroot, alternating between taller plants to achieve the desired height reasonably quickly and infilling with smaller ones. I’ve never planted a hedge before so all advice happily and gratefully received.

I would start with maiden whips all the same size. Small ones would suffer in the shade from larger ones.  Smaller plants will settle in faster and grow to a desired height much faster.  If you are planting bare root, you are running out of time, they need to be in before the end of March.

That’s a shame because I’m away next week so was hoping to do it the week after (Easter week). Is that the case even ‘oop north’?
