Daphne

hi, I’m a new Gardner so still getting to grips with the do’s and dont’s of gardening. My dad bought me a lovely Daphne with beautiful white fragrant flowers. A few weeks ago the leaves started to look like they had been pinched in the middle and looked s little crinkled. They have now got worse and are beginning to fall off. Is this normal or is there something that I should be doing differently?

They can be a bit finicky, particularly when planting as they dislike any kind of root disturbance.  I had 'Eternal Fragrance' in a large container and it did well for 2-3 years but I planted some spring bulbs near it and suspect I damaged the roots as it died on me.
Could you have damaged the roots?  They are hardy down to -10 or more but won't establish well in exposed locations or in waterlogged ground.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Its possible that they were damaged when my dad planted it up. It’s been in the same large container ever since. Thanks for the reply 😃

Is it still in a container? Try moving it to a sheltered position from the wind and with some protection from very intense sun - if we ever get any - it may recover.

They are tempermental devils, Alan Titchmarsh says they suddenly die for no reason, we have had Jacqueline Postil,Odora,Beulah, in our last house, they did very well, unfortunatelt way to big to bring with us, have tried Eternal fragrance, and recently bought another unfortunately, I cannot find paperwork with name it doesn look very happy at all, they dont usually like being in pots, like a slightly acidic soil which we have here.I dont know the Perfume Princess.Bob has everything else covered.
  • Should Daphne be planted in ericaceous soil?
In a world where you can be anything, always be kind.

Should Daphne be planted in ericaceous soil?
According to the RHS, they are happiest in neutral to alkaline soils, well drained and with plenty of organic matter added, so I wouldn't use any acidic composts.
