Hi, I am mulching the entire garden this year and investigated options with bulk buying on the internet.

Just wondered has anyone bulk bought recently and if so their experience and the quality of the product.....

    StillLearning, can you let us know which mulch you mean?  The definition of a mulch is anything which is used to cover the soil surface in order to reduce evaporation of water and can be compost, bark, slate, gravel.. you get the idea! :)

    I bought mushroom compost/manure from CPA Horticulture. I am pleased with the quality. They also sell various types of bark.

    I mulched my whole garden and paths with wood shavings from a local furniture maker (untreated wood). Yes, some people say that it takes nitrogen from the ground etc, but others say it is not a problem and it releases it back as the wood breaks down. For a free, bulk, organic resource, that last for years, it has transformed my garden and i have had pretty much zero weeds. It cut the watering in half and looks lovely. Wood workers and tree surgeons often have tonnes of chip / shavings / bark to give away. Worth investigating.

    I have bought from CPA too for the last 2 years - very pleased with the horse/mushroom compost
    Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
    Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

    I get wood chippings delivered free by 2 local tree surgery companies. I just gave one of them a call, and approached the other when they were working for a neighbour.

    We have successfully used wood chip for approx. 4 years now - a trailer load for £15. We bought our own small Bosch shredder - it is brilliant.  We are lucky enough to have 20 - 30 trees here so the branches and twigs that drop during storms keeps us busy with shredding - say once a month we fill 4  or so black sacks with chips. The chips make the garden look even more natural - suppress weeds and easy to top up when necessary - once a year or perhaps 2 years.

    GD, do you use all the chip on your land? I've been longing to get a chipper, but don't have much space to store it.
