We have moved into a house which has a getrude Jekyll. I suspect it has a sucker next to it as it has no throns and does not resemble like the other stems.

Looks like it to me. Put on some thick gloves and pull it at the base to break it loose from the rootstock but without pulling up the roots. If you just trim with secateurs, even well below soil level, it is likely to come back but sometimes they resist and that's all you can do. Not a serious problem if you are vigilant and you clearly are.
