Snapped
in Fruit & veg
hi I’m totally new to gardening and this forum so hello everyone, I need a little help plz ,I planted a Apple tree last week and supported it and places proper ties on it but we had strong winds last night and one of the branches has totally snapped off , do I cut it just above the next nodule and just leave it at that or do I put something over the raw wood bit that’s snapped .
Thanks .

Hi
I would do a clean slanting cut as you say, just above the next nodule. It won't need anything painted on it or put over it ... it'll be fine.
Although it's good to stake newly planted trees, make sure you've allowed for a little bit of flexion ... they resist the wind better that way and grow stronger.

OH DEAR.
HERE IS A GOOD WEBSITE WITH SOME USEFUL INFO.
https://www.gardenfocused.co.uk/fruitarticles/apples/prune.php
IF THE BRANCH SNAPPED NEAR TO THE VERTICAL TRUNK, I WOULD CUT IT BACK AS CLOSE TO THE TRUNK AS YOU CAN COMFORTABLY MANAGE.
IF IT SNAPPED OFF SOME DISTANCE FROM THE MAIN TRUNK THEN PRUNE IT JUST ABOVE A BUD THAT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL GROW IN THE DIRECTION YOU WANT. I.E. UPWARDS AND OUTWARDS.
NO REAL HARM DONE. YOU HAVE 100 YEARS OF GROWING TO ENJOY.

If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
