New fruit trees

Hi everybody.

I've just taken delivery of 2 fruit tress from Thompson Morgan. 1Brown Turkey fig and 1 Victoria plum.  The fig is in a small pot and the plum in some soil wrapped  in plastic. Unfortunately there are no planting instructions. My intention was to plant them in large containers and put them in my unheated greenhouse. Is it safe to do so now,  or should I keep them moist and inside? Any and all suggestions gratefully received. I live in Bedford.

Many thanks.  Martin

  • Pot them on asap, they will be fine in the greenhouse :)

I would plant them in their containers now.  I would put the plum outside ... it's hardy and doesn't need protection.

If the fig has some tiny baby figs on you might get a better crop if you keep it in the greenhouse during this very cold spell, but when spring comes it too will be happy outside if you have a sunny sheltered spot.

My Brown Turkey is outside all year around ... it's planted in a container of JI No 3 loam based compost with added grit at a ratio of about 3:1 and lives on our terrace in the south-east facing corner ... it could do better if it faced due south, but that's the best spot I can offer it.  image

  • Will do.  Thanks ever so much Dove and Learnin.  It's appreciated.
