Alliums

I received a plant order yesterday, and with the order came a free gift of a bag of 10 mixed allium bulbs, is it too late to plant them now? Or should I wait until autumn?

Pat.

Plant them now ... on the first mild day when the soil îsnt frosted.

They won't keep until autumn and will rot away.

    Good morning Pat

Maybe a little too late , but I would be inclined to plant them anyway .

What have you got to lose ? As a 'freebie' anyway , it will be a bonus when they flower .

  • Thank you both, that’s exactly what I wanted to hear. Just got to wait for a mild day, light frost here in the west mids this morning.

I planted alliums right up until April last year, they galloped away and flowered a little later than usual. I found some that I had lifted then forgotten about in the garage. They had roots growing to about half an inch, and an inch long green shoot. Bulbs want to grow. Just plant them deep, at least 4 inches.

  • Thank you fidgetbones, I was wondering about planting depth.
