Strawberry plants.

Morning all,

I have ordered 25 Cambridge favourite strawberry plants, and have had an email to say they have been despatched. When they arrive I will pot them up for a month or so, but ultimately they will be going into hanging baskets, but, my question is, how many should I put into each basket? There would be room in each basket to put 12 plants in, but would putting so many lower the productivity of them? Do the roots need to spread? I have attached a pic of one of the baskets.

Thank you in advance of any replies,

Pat.

To get the best out of the strawberries I would put one plant in there, they do grow very big. You could try two, but each plant will get to 12” diameter.  Bear in mind that the soil in those diminishes as it get lower down. I would advise you to line those type  baskets with a compost bag making holes about 2” up from the bottom.  If not the water tends to run out of holes before it reaches the bottom.

i grow mine in pots in the greenhouse, 10 or 12” pots.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Thank you Lyn, I can see a re-think is in order.
