How long between laying and cutting turf?

I laid turf in a small garden a bout six weeks ago and what with all the rian we have had it looks good and is growing well.  However, I have no idea how well its establishing itself into the soil I laid it on.

Could someone please advise me how long I should leave it before I give it a trim.

At this time of year, the grass will be barely growing, so wait till at least the beginning of March. Don't worry if the grass gets quite tall by then, it's normal. The first cut is always the one you would set on the highest setting anyway. If it's been raining, the grass turf should have bonded with the soil underneath by now, but avoid trampling all over it now, as this may ruin the grass.

BML, where do you live?  I wouldn't expect anybody to be laying turf in the UK at this time of year.

  • There's nothing wrong with laying turf through winter. But I wouldn't be thinking about cutting it until it really starts to root and grow properly in March/April.
